Description

By Greg Kroah-Hartman

Published by O'Reilly Media (http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596100797/)

Written by a leading developer and maintainer of the Linux kernel,

Linux Kernel in a Nutshell is a comprehensive overview of kernel configuration and building, a critical task for Linux users and administrators.

No distribution can provide a Linux kernel that meets all users' needs. Computers big and small have special requirements that require reconfiguring and rebuilding the kernel. Whether you are trying to get sound, wireless support, and power management working on a laptop or incorporating enterprise features such as logical volume management on a large server, you can benefit from the insights in this book.

Linux Kernel in a Nutshell covers the entire range of kernel tasks, starting with downloading the source and making

sure that the kernel is in sync with the versions of the tools you need. In addition to configuration and installation steps, the book offers reference material and discussions of related topics such as control of kernel options at runtime.

A key benefit of the book is a chapter on determining exactly what drivers are needed for your hardware. Also included are recipes that list what you need to do to accomplish a wide range of popular tasks.

Buggy

:
There are all sorts of rendering errors, the reader often fails to advance forward and simply cycles back to the beginning of the chapter. The index is MIA, along with the colophon. Great content though, but given that it's avaliable for free online, there really is no excuse for this. However, it was hard to tell that this book was about building the Linux kernel, I passed by it numerous times until Google pointed it out (mabye _Building the Linux Kernel_ would be a better title?) A more detailed description to reflect this would be appreciated. Also, as with all Lexcycle eBook apps apparently, the fact that tables and fixed-width text runs off the page is quite irritating. It makes it nearly impossible to copy the often lengthy scripts in here. Why, may I ask, are the iBooks versions usually several times more expensive than the apps? As for the book itself, a mention of a few more filetypes like reiser4 and ZFS along with any other changes over the 2.6.2x and the 2.6.3x series should be added.
